This is my Illustration Friday drawing for the word insect. Can you please comment on it, please!!!! I used coloured pencils and ink. I'm not very good at adding colour to any of my pictures without making them look horrible. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I could improve on this? Thanks!!! :)

Funny, I was looking at your excellent bug and thinking how nice the pink in his cheeks looked, then I saw what you wrote about the color. I think it's splendid, but in general I'm wondering if the problem you see has to do more with values than with color. Your blacks are really black in this drawing. Maybe you need to add more value to the color? But like I said, I liked it the way it was. Just a thought. Keep it up.

This may not be a good example of color messing up a picture. I have to agree that it does not hurt this image at all. It gives it a dark, perhaps dirty-kid look. Now, if that is not what you were goping for, I'd suggest adding the color before the cross-hatching... do it while it is still just outlines. Then if the hatch-shading is still needed, it won't smear the color like doing th ecolor last smears the black ink.

Not that I know anything much, but if you worked the illo in BW first and saved, then "layered" color, maybe it would be more the effect you wanted.

Me, I love the grittiness -- it amkes the bug more charming, like a lil' street kid.

I think your insect is lovely, even if he is a bit sad. :-) Keep up the good work!
